H&J Smith is privately owned regional department store group with stores in Invercargill, Dunedin, Queenstown, Gore, Balclutha, Te Anau, and Mosgiel
The Invercargill Department Store with over 12,000 sqm of retail space is one of the largest stores in New Zealand and the flagship of the company. Offering a comprehensive range of Fashion, Beauty, Gift, and Home Furnishings products the store holds a unique place in the New Zealand retail marketplace.
In 2015 the company purchased the Arthur Barnett department store in Dunedin’s Meridian Mall to add to the existing store network that covers Southland and the rapidly growing Queenstown/Southern Lakes region. With the Dunedin store now re-branded to H&J Smith the company now offers customers comprehensive coverage of Otago, Southland, and the Central Lakes region.

What started in a small store on Invercargill’s Dee Street by Helen and brother John more than 100 years ago has grown to be one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned retail companies with the group now encompassing not only the department Mitre 10 MEGA stores in Invercargill and Queenstown as well as Outdoor stores in both of these markets.
